Autumn Adventures, October 2020: Pumpkins, Half-term and Halloween

The COVID-19  pandemic has taken the wind out of my sails a bit when it comes to planning fun family activities and daytrips. Summer 2020 feels like something of a damp squib, but I am starting to get my mojo back – reinvigorated perhaps by the promise of Autumnal adventures.

We love Autumn! It’s our favourite season – jam packed with family birthdays, parties, celebrations, half-term, Halloween, bonfire night… so much fun to be had…even if, this year, it will be socially distanced and in groups of six and under!

Still, let’s look on the bright side and make the most of those chilly days, dark evenings, crisp leaves and hygge moments. This is what we have planned so far for October 2020.

Pumpkin Patch

We’re in SW London so most of the places we visit are in and around London, Surrey, Kent…although we do venture further afield for something worth it.

A visit to a Pumpkin Patch has become an annual family staple. Lots of fun choosing and carving (or decorating if you can’t be bothered with the mess) pumpkins. The kids enjoy dressing up for the occasion and getting involved in pumpkin-themed activities. So many places provide stunning backdrops from some gorgeous keepsake photos too – it’s well worth a visit.

We have been going to Crockford Bridge Farm for the last few years now. It’s great – small but perfectly formed. Last year it was very busy – the secret is clearly out – but 2020 requires you to book a times lot for the Pumpkin Festival– I like that idea!

Another one we might try this year is Pumpkin Week 2020 at Secrett’s of Milford. The event runs during October half-term and costs £2 per person. Choose your pumpkin and stay for a bbq lunch

This is a good drive away but we are also planning to visit Pumpkin Village Nights at Marsh Farm in Chelmsford, Essex. With Halloween being a bit different this year – a nighttime event with candlelit pumpkins, funfair rides and spooky food and drink will be lots of fun!

As the Pumpkin Village Nights is far from home we plan plan to make a day of it by visiting the Halloween Festival at Marsh Farm Animal Adventure Park beforehand.

Look out for a separate post on Halloween – ideas for day trips and COVID-safe trick or treating, as well as activities you can do at home.

October Half Term

The Gruffalo Trail is back at Kew and Wakehurst from 17th October to 1st November. The trail is included with your ticket – you need to pre-book online. We will combine the Gruffalo trail with a visit to the Children’s Garden – you need to book a time slot for this separately.

Look out for a separate post for COVID-friendly half-term activities and adventures!

Enjoy October and have fun! Amy x
