‘Our Great British Road Trip’ or what we’re doing this summer

The great British summer is finally here, and the mercury is set to rocket this weekend. The end of term is in sight and I can feel the summer holidays drifting closer on a warm breeze.

I can’t wait for the summer holidays! It’s been a long term and a restorative break is much needed. We have so many plans, ideas, hopes and dreams for this summer. The well-shared meme- an idyllic family shot with the caption, “you only get 18 summers with your kids” (or something like that) struck a chord with me and I am determined to make the most of the holiday time we have while they are young (and want to hang out with us!)

Because I am just not ready to fly with my 4-year-old yet, we love exploring the UK. In truth, the British coast and countryside is glorious and, if you have the weather, you can find the most incredible and inspiring holiday spots. My kids are brilliant in the car (and actually enjoy a long journey) so something like London to Cornwall is very doable for us.

We are off to Wales for the first week of August and I have decided to extend the holiday and have a 3-week UK road trip. Dad has to be back in London for work, so the littluns and I will drop him at a station and zoom off on our summer adventures.

We’ll be in mid-Wales, so the current (vague) plan is to make it up to the Lake District, stopping off and staying over in interesting places en-route. On the to-do list so far is Cadbury World, Stratford-upon-Avon and Warwick Castle- with more being added daily.

I’m biting the bullet and investing in a new tent and camping equipment – the expression “all the gear and no idea” very much applicable at this point- but it’s the cheapest and easiest way to make this trip happen. Plus, I think the littluns will absolutely love the adventure of camping. I’ll share the plan with you once I know it, in the meantime, the below list is the must-do summer experience list, compiled by two very keen little Londoners:

Things to do this summer

  • Swim in a lake
  • Paddle in a stream
  • Go camping
  • Go stargazing
  • Toast marshmallows over a camp fire
  • Make a shelter
  • Make sandcastles
  • Collect shells
  • Paint rocks

Enjoy your summer adventures!
